NAME = Dr Chris Clifford
EMAIL = chrisclifford1969@yahoo.com
COMMENT = Dear Keith (if I may),
I am wanting to contact the Association, following the death of my father who died suddenly last week aged 63. I know he had been in contact with the Association in recent years and attended a reunion. I do not know how to contact some of his contemporaries but I know he was in close contact with a few ex-colleagues.
He was a REME serviceman when he was discharged but in recent years has been a very active British Legion Appeal Organiser in Merthyr Tydfil.
His funeral is likely to be a week on Friday or early the following week, not yet confirmed.
Kind regards
Chris Clifford

David Crowson, C Coy, 49B, RIP

Gentlemen, Yesterday four Sept49er's, Max Warwick, Pete Henry, Jeff Cook and myself attended the funeral of our friend and colleague David Crowson, at the South Bristol crematorium. In the way that these occasions can, it was a lovely warm celebration of David's life, and Sharon, David's daughter, told us that she had learnt an awful lot about her father during our visit.

First, with the permission of the family, on behalf of the Sept49er's, I read out an eulogy during the committal service which was very well received.Afterwards at the reception, we briefed the whole family on the Army Apprentice National Memorial, pointing out that David's name is to be found on a Comtab, thus the memorial, when dedicated on the 7th September would be a good place to visit. On behalf of the AOBA we presented Sharon with the AANM information pack, a full transcript of the text to be inscribed on the memorial monolith, including TeeCee's poem, a copy of the selected reading to be used during the memorial dedication service and a copy of the eulogy.

In addition Pete and Max presented a set of digital copies of photographs taken of David during his apprentice training, several of which were new to Sharon. Finally, Jeff Cook , on behalf of the AOBA, presented to Sharon the family memorial scroll.

This is the truth the poet sings,
That a Sorrow’s Crown of Sorrow is remembering
happier things.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Sixty-one years ago, on the 9th September 1949, one hundred and thirty five boys passed through the Arborfield Army Apprentices School’s famous gates for the first time, to begin a three-year apprenticeship.

Many of those boys came from an underprivileged and chaotic background. However the ethos that controlled and directed the activities of a system that turned boys into skilled soldier-tradesmen had at the heart of its intellectual model the Christian principles of “Character and Loyalty” and the military virtues of “ Discipline, Steadfastness and Devotion to Duty.

These are not just words; we believed in them and lived by them. The shared experience of education, training and comradeship also gave to birth to something quite unique. We became a “Band of Brothers” the Sept49’er. Proof of that bond is demonstrated here today by the presence of Peter Henry, Max Warwick, Jeff Cook and myself not only to celebrate David’s life, but to ensure standards are fully maintained, when David marches onto the celestial parade ground as a soldier should.

David’s departure was not unexpected, as he had been in full time nursing care for over two years. He bore his illness with courage and fortitude. He always found it highly amusing and very droll that the Wills Woodbines he used to smoke came from the factory site upon which his nursing home was built. Max Warwick and I maintained contact by phone, e-mail, and visits as and when we could.

There is a poem inscribed onto the Army Apprentice National Memorial that contains the line” always young, laughing full of fun”. It certainly was an accurate description of how we found him during visits even though bedridden and dependent on oxygen.

David had a successful career, in that he became a Weapons Artificer and rose to the rank of Warrant officer Class one. In the twilight of his career, with special permission from the MOD, he held the appointment of Regimental Sergeant Major to a Royal Artillery Regiment for six months until a suitable candidate was found. A very unusual appointment and a clear demonstration of his military qualities.

Our “ Brother” David was a typical ex-boy and a good egg.

Repatriation Report Pte JS Vatubua Royal Regt of Scotland

Subject: REPATRIATION REPORT - Tuesday, 11th January 2011

REPATRIATION REPORT

Tuesday, 11th January 2011

From operations in Afghanistan, the repatriation of:

Private Joseva Saguanagonedau Vatubua (24), 5th Battalion, Argyle & Sutherland Highlander, Royal Regiment of Scotland

Private Joe Vatubua was killed by an explosion while on patrol in the Nahr-e-Saraj District, Helmand Province, on 1st January, 2011.

Service veterans and members of the public turned out in the following “stations of vigil” to pay their respects to the fallen as the cortege made its way on the 47 mile route from the point of arrival at RAF Lyneham to the John Radcliffe Hospital at Oxford.

Wootton Bassett - Town Centre (1639)

This report from Duncan Wostenholme, RMA

Members of the public joined family and friends in Wootton Bassett on a grey late afternoon. Mr Bert Davey represented the Town Mayor, who had a prior engagement. Several uniformed soldiers, with others in civilian clothes were also present.

There were many veterans in berets, and 27 riders from the Royal British Legion Bikers Branch. 11 standards were paraded: RBL Potterne, Devizes, Abertillery, Cheriton, Merthyr Tydfil and Dursley & Cam; Associations: Royal Regiment of Wales, RAFA Corsham, Royal Observer Corps, The Parachute Regiment and The Royal Berkshire Regiment.

Gable Cross Police Station - On the A420 just east of the junction with the A419 (1656 pm)

This report from Pat Bristow, RMA

The roadside saw about20 members of the public, 12 Forces veterans and 20 Police officers present to honour the passing of the cortege.

Association standards included The Royal Marines Swindon and Reading, The Royal Signals and The Royal Engineers Swindon and the RAF Lyneham Old Boys.

At the Road Bridge - over the A420 between Shrivenham and High worth (1705)

Report by Derrick Jeans RAFA

At the bridge over the A420 as night fell, District Councillor Elaine Ware and five members of the public stood as the cortege passed slowly by. Oncoming traffic slowed to a stop as a mark of respect.

United Kingdom Defence Academy - at the Watchfield Roundabout on the A420, adjacent to the UKDA. (1707)

Report by Patrick Hopper RMA

Nine Royal Marines veterans and some of their wives assembled at the roadside, along with our usual comrades from the Royal Artillery and Royal Berkshire Regiment and their wives, and Air Commodore Marcus Witherow, RAF Regt (Retd). The branch standard of RMA Poole & District was paraded. There was also a number of members of the public with us. We were pleased to welcome also a visitor, Captain Luke Wheeler, Royal Marines and his mother Barbara.

Serving officers in uniform from the Defence Academy included Lieutenant Colonel Neil Dem-McKay, Majors Jules Kilpatrick, Ali Hempelstall and Colour Sergeant Tywcross, all of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, Major Claire Heighington, RMP, Captain Blair Smart, Queen’s Own Yeomanry, Sergeants Louise Gaze, RAMC and Sarah Cox, RLC.

The salute to the cortege was led by Lt Col Dem-McKay RRS and ordered by WO1 John Houghton, RAF Regiment.

Folly Hill Lay-by - east of Faringdon on the A420, just north of the A417 junction (1720)

This report by Joy Blake

Due to the darkness closing in today, it was impossible to do an exact head count, but would estimate that about 45 people attended the Folly Hill lay-by, to pay their respects to Private Joseva Vatubua, as the cortege passed us by at 5.20 pm.

The community police were outstanding in providing traffic control, by placing cones and flashing lights all along the lay-by to warn the oncoming traffic of our whereabouts.

Among the many members of the Faringdon Branch of the Royal British Legion were others from other local branches, even as far away as Maidenhead. We were also joined by veterans of all three services, wearing their medals and berets. The standards paraded were: the Union flag, RBL Faringdon, Bampton, Highworth, Shrivenham and Wantage and the Royal Naval Association also from Wantage.

John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford - near St Anthony Padua Parish Church, Headley Way.

This report from John Walker RDG

We here at the Final Turn in Oxford stood true and strong to honour the fallen soldier. There were seven Royal British Legion standards on parade: Islip, Chalgrove, Henley, Wheatley, Bicester, Kidlington and Kidlington Womens Section. Association standards included The Parachute Regiment (Oxford), The Coldstream Guards, The Guards Division, Royal Air Force, Canal Zone (Oxon), the Royal Navy & Royal Marines (Oxford) and the banner of The Royal Dragoon Guards. The parade I/c was G. Whelan (Para), the 2i/c J. Lewendon (RA) and the Wreath Marshal R. Parker (R. Signals). A must for inclusion, or I’m told that John Walker will be sent to the Tower in chains!

There were 55 veterans in berets and medals and 40 others from all three services. St John’s Ambulance attended and the Thames Valley Police were out in force, doing their traffic duty and standing alongside us on the road side, under the leadership of Chief Inspector C. Agger. A huge crowd of the Oxford public turned out again, with their Union flags and many young children, all the way up the hill to the Final Turn. There were also crowds of people on the Oxford ring road leading up to Headley Hill. A few of us were on duty from 1200 hrs, just to let those know, who did not get the message about the three hour delay. One couple, both in the late 70s, had come all the way from Northampton. However, they had to go back as they do not enjoy driving in the dark. We made them welcome with tea and cakes and they went on their way, bless them. We seem to get people joining us who can’t make the Wootton Bassett venue at the later times. All are welcome while space allows.

The cortege passed us by at 1805 hrs.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

REPATRIATION REPORT

Thursday 06 January 2011

From operations in Afghanistan, the repatriation of:

Warrant Officer 2 Charles Henry Wood (34), 23 Pioneer Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps

WO2 Wood died when he was caught in the blast of an IED, while leading a Counter IED Task Force on a route clearance mission through Khushdal Kalay, in the Helmand River Valley on 28th December, 2010.

Service veterans and members of the public turned out in the following “stations of vigil” to pay their respects to the fallen as the cortege made its way on the 47 mile route from the point of arrival at RAF Lyneham to the John Radcliffe Hospital at Oxford. .

Wootton Bassett - Town Centre (1451)

This report from Duncan Wostenholm, RMA

Warrant Officer Wood returned home after falling in the service of his country. His family, friends and colleagues joined townspeople and veterans to salute his passing as the coffin draped with the Union flag passed through Wootton Bassettt, pausing for a silent tribute and floral tributes.

Among those present were Mr James Gray, MP for North Wiltshire, Cllr Mary Champion, Mayor of Wootton Bassett and her consort, Mr Bert Davey, Major General Dominic Fletcher, Captain Billy Dilkes, of the Pioneer Regt, RLC and Captain Robert McAllister, Royal Logistics Corps.

Military personnel in No 1 uniform and combat greens stood silently in honour of their fallen comrade. 28 members of the Royal British Legion Motorcycle Group were joined by 12 other riders and as usual Steve and his members looked after the family.

13 standards were paraded: RBL Swindon, Hungerford, Devizes, Merthyr Tydfil, Abertillery, Dursley & Cam and Lambourn, plus the Association standards of the Aden Veterans, Parachute Regiment Swindon, Royal Berkshire Regiment Windsor, Royal Navy Pershore & District, Royal Regiment of Wales (24th Regiment of Foot) Newport and the Royal Observer Corps 12 Group.

Gable Cross Police Station - on the A420 just east of the junction with the A419 (1509)

Report by Pat Bristow RMA

Four Association standards were paraded: Royal Marines - Swindon, Royal Signals - Swindon, Royal Engineers - Swindon and the RAF Lyneham Old Boys. There were 12 veterans present at the roadside and 25 members of the public, plus 80 police officers.

Sadly, the cortege passed very swiftly, barely giving us time to pay our respects in a proper and dignified manner, something commented on by the police officers with us, so no doubt a gentle word or two will get back to those involved!

At the Road Bridge - B4000 over the A420 between Shrivenham and Highworth (1400)

Report by Derrick Jeans, RAFA

Councillor Elaine Ware and nine members of the public stood to honour WO2 Wood as his cortege passed by. Cars on the A420 drew to a halt as their drivers paid their respects.

United Kingdom Defence Academy - at the Watchfield Roundabout on the A420, adjacent to the UKDA. (1520)

Report by Patrick Hopper, RMA

There were 7 RM veterans and two of their ladies present, as were our usual comrades from the RA, Royal Berks and the Korean War, along with the standard of RMA Poole & District. The Defence Academy were represented by Lt Col Andy Stevens, Majors Steven Sutherland, Ian Broadhurst, John Green, Mark Ashton, Andy Gartside, David Barlow, Scott Dunlop, Peter Norton, WO1s Scott Johnson and A.J. Peters, all of the Royal Logistics Corps, Captain Simon Crowther, Royal Signals, Major Claire Heighington, RMP, Squadron Leader Michelle Randal, RAF, and WO1 John Houghton, RAF Regiment. Air Commodore Marcus Witherow, RAF Regiment (Retd) and 14 civilian Academy staff and members of the public also attended at the roadside vigil.

The salute to the cortege was led by Lt Col Andy Stevens, RLC and ordered by WO1 Mark Hannington, Mercian Regt, the Academy RSM.

Many thanks to the two MOD Police officers, PCs Mark Cleary and David Hutton, for their traffic control.

Folly Hill Lay-by - east of Faringdon on the A420, just north of the A417 junction (1415)

This report by Joy Blake

Despite the time changes we still had 60 people attending the Folly Hill lay-by to await the cortege, which passed us by at about 3.30 pm, for our respects to be shown to the fallen soldier, WO2 Charles Wood.

Many veterans attended, together with members of the Faringdon & District Branch of the Royal British Legion, and members of other local branches. The Faringdon Town Mayor, Mrs Margaret Barker was present, with the Chairman of the Vale of the White Horse Branches of the RBL, avid Drew.

We were also pleased that a gentleman on his way home to Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire) who had attended a meeting at the Defence Academy at Shrivenham, and had seen people assembling there, had stopped off at the Folly Hill lay-by and asked if he could join us, to show his respect. He told me that both his father and his grandfather had been members of the RBL in their day.

The standards paraded were: the Union flag, RBL Faringdon & District, Bampton, Highworth, Shrivenham, Wantage, Oxfordshire Womens Branch, RAFA Brize Norton & Carterton and the Wantage Royal Navy Veterans Association.

John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford - near Anthony Padua Parish Church, Headley Way.

This report from John Walker, RDG

We here at the Final Turn stood strong and true to honour the fallen soldier. There were nine Royal British Legion standards paraded: Oxford City, Islip, Henley, Wheatley, Hazelmere, Bicester, Kidlington, and Kidlington Womens Section. Association standards included The Parachute Regiment Oxford, The Royal Tank Regiment Oxon, The Royal Air Force Police, Canal Zone Veterans Oxon, the Coldstream Guards and the banner of The Royal Dragoon Guards.

There were 65 veterans in berets and medals and 25 others from all three services. The Lord Mayor of Oxford, Mr John Goddards was joined by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Mr Ian Inshaw, the County Council Chairlady Hilary Hibbert-Biles and the Thames Valley Police, not only doing their normal traffic control duties but also on parade with us, under Chief Inspector C. Agger. A group of serving soldiers came over from 23 Pioneer Regiment RLC Bicester. They included Major D. Mason, (2i/c), Major C. Poole (QM) and Captain M. Abbiss (Welfare Officer) of the Regiment.

A very large gathering of the Oxford public were there once again with their huge Union flags and many school children from the nearby school. There were also large crowds all along the Oxford ring road, leading up the hill to the Final Turn. I/c of the parade was G. Whelan (Para), 2i/c was J. Lewendon (RA) and Wreath Marshal was R. Parker (R. Sigs). The weather was overcast at 40C and the cortege passed us at 1600 hrs. Sad again to report that we’ll be back here next week.
